CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Friendly City, Secret City, Music City, Scenic City.

Athens, Oak Ridge, Nashville and Chattanooga all have an official nickname.

Cleveland should have one, too, Mayor Tom Rowland says.

The mayor said he will name a committee at some point to seek nickname ideas from schoolchildren and everyone else.

“When somebody says ‘Friendly City,’ what do you think of?” Rowland asked. “Athens, of course.”

“We are a Flag City USA,” Rowland said, “I would like to search for something that signifies what the internal workings of this community really are. What I am going to propose at a later time is that I be authorized to form a search committee.”

Ann Davis, an Athens City Council member, said she thinks being “friendly” is all about amenities.

“Most cities this size don’t have an active arts center, an award-winning museum and a vibrant senior center,” she said. “And our newly established visitors center makes Athens an even friendlier place to live or visit.”

The Athens city website says the nickname is all about a friendly attitude.
