Aleksandravicius paces Davidson

Sophia Aleksandravicius scored a game-high 23 points Thursday to lead No. 8 seed Davidson past No. 9 College of Charleston in the first round of the Southern Conference women’s basketball tournament at McKenzie Arena.

The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward, a first-team all-conference pick, also grabbed nine rebounds, blocked four shots and had three assists and three steals in the 69-53 win.

Aleksandravicius carried the Wildcats in the first half before getting some help in the second as Davidson (14-16) used a balanced attack to outscore the Cougars 38-23 in the final 20 minutes.

“People who had open shots hit their open shots, I think we drove more and I think we came out with bigger intensity in the second half,” she said.

Davidson will face top-seeded Appalachian State (23-5) in the quarterfinals this morning. The Mountaineers swept the regular-season series, overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit at home on Feb. 2
