CLEVELAND, Tenn.-Bradley County officials had to step in this year to fund the annual Great American Cleanup events scheduled for the spring.

The events cost about $50,000, and the state decided not to send any money, said Joanne Masket, executive director of Cleveland/Bradley Keep America Beautiful, which organizes the county’s Great American Cleanup.

“We were not chosen to get any [state] funding this year, so we need to thank Mayor [D. Gary] Davis and the county commissioners,[they] are paying for this event, and it is very expensive,” she said Friday at the annual Keep America Beautiful breakfast.

“We are glad they stepped up and are willing to offer this to get rid of things properly and not on the streets or illegal dump sites,” Maskew said.

One of the highlights of the cleanup each spring is Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Last year, more than 800 households took part.
