Five teens and three adults living together on a 41-foot sailing sloop for six days is a crash course in teamwork, say Boy Scouts from Troop 2.
“We basically had to give up thinking about ourselves and work as a team,” said Matt Cook, 17. “The key word was teamwork during that entire trip.”
The Scouts and their two troop leaders, Rod Cook and Ed Sunder, participated in a high-adventure trip to Florida Sea Base in Lower Matecumbe Key. They were the working crew for Capt. Joe Wischmeier aboard the Spindrift.
The Florida National High Adventure Sea Base is run by Boy Scouts of America in the Florida Keys, according to its website. The main Sea Base is located in Islamorada, with other bases at the Brinton Environmental Center on Summerland Key and the Bahamas Sea Base in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas.
Troop 2 has 22 members ranging in age from 11 to 17. The high-adventure trip was restricted to teens 14 or older. Scouts making the trip were Randall Smith, Clayton Curole, Eddie Sunder, Matt Cook and Michael Cook.
