DAYTON, Tenn.-Rhea County commissioners took the first steps last week toward redistricting after the 2010 census, authorizing the state’s Local Planning Office to begin work on the project.
Commission Chairman Ronnie Raper reminded commissioners that staff from the Local Planning Office and the County Technical Assistance Service historically have provided analytical and mapping services for redrawing legislative lines.
He said the maps will be drawn to reflect population changes since the 2000 census.
“There is a possibility you will lose some of your district [area] and some will gain,” he said. “If you’ve had a subdivision [added] in your district, your district will probably shrink.”
Commissioners will have an opportunity to review recommendations before approving a final report.
