DALTON, Ga. – Dalton city school board members passed a $54 million preliminary budget during their Monday night meeting. The budget has remained basically unchanged from what Superintendent Jim Hawkins outlined to the board in April, Hawkins said.

The budget makes reductions in employee salaries and administration and department costs. The final budget will be voted on in June.

The board also discussed transportation after board Chairman Steve Williams said he had gotten quite a few comments about why the school board decided not to cut transportation.

“It has been the biggest question,” Williams said.

According to a study done by the school, cutting transportation to students living less than a mile from school would not eliminate the need for any buses and would result in minimal savings.
