Walsh back on target

ATHENS, Ga. — Whether Georgia senior Blair Walsh regained his full-time kicking job during Saturday’s 19-10 win over Kentucky is unknown, but he definitely regained his chance at becoming the all-time leading scorer in Southeastern Conference history.

Walsh scored 13 points on the strength of four field goals in four attempts — three from 39 yards out and one from 25. The 5-foot-10, 192-pounder from Boca Raton, Fla., had made just nine of 17 attempts in the seven games leading up to Saturday and for a third straight game was in a rotation with fellow senior Brandon Bogotay.

“It felt like old times coming off the field after making them and with your team giving you high-fives because you made them and not because you missed them and they’re trying to console you,” Walsh said.

Walsh’s first 39-yarder capped Georgia’s opening possession and tied the game at 3. Bogotay came in on the second drive, missing wide right from 52 yards out, and Walsh handled place-kicking chores the rest of the game. The two continued to rotate kicking off.

“Certainly today I felt like Walsh was really nailing them, and we decided to leave him in there,” coach Mark Richt said. “He came through. How we start out next week? I don’t know.”
