HOMERVILLE, Ga. – Authorities say a 350-pound black bear knocked a hunter to the ground and bit him severely in south Georgia.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say the hunter, 54-year-old Mitch Canady, sustained severe injuries to his wrist, arm, chest and pelvic areas.
DNR spokesman Rick Lavender tells the Valdosta Daily Times that Canady, from Macclenny, Fla., was flown to a Jacksonville hospital.
Lavender said Canady was with a group of hunters using dogs to hunt bears in Clinch County Saturday, when one of the hunters shot a bear. Authorities say a hunting dog then ran up to the bear and bit it. Lavender said the bear bolted, ran into Canady and bit him.
Other hunters kicked the bear and shot it, killing the animal after four shots.
