When Washington was bailing out some U.S. car companies in recent years, one major auto manufacturer, Ford Motor Co., declined to take the money — and to maintain greater independence from Washington.
Recently, Ford put together an ad noting that it had not taken the bailout. But that didn’t sit well with the Obama administration. The Detroit News reports the administration called Ford and “questioned” the ad — which Ford soon pulled.
So Ford first suffered a competitive disadvantage by not taking a bailout accepted by other companies, and now Ford is evidently being pressured by the Obama administration not to point out publicly the fact that it didn’t take those taxpayer dollars.
Shouldn’t it, rather, be cause for relief when a company turns down government money that never should have been offered in the first place?
