Welcome to Week 4 of the college football season and the fourth SoConversation between The Citadel beat writer Jeff Hartsell of the Charleston Post and Courier, Elon beat writer Adam Smith of the Burlington Times News and UTC beat writer John Frierson of the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Each week the three veteran Southern Conference writers will share their thoughts on what’s happening with the teams they cover and within the league.
While most of the SoCon was napping last Saturday, or maybe catching up on some reading, three teams actually suited up and took the field. What’s your take on last week?
JEFF: “The Lion King in 3-D” was legit, but I’m ready for some football. Chattanooga has revealed itself as a real SoCon contender, IMHO, and this week’s game at App State is, of course, huge for the Mocs. The Mocs’ defense, fairly porous a year ago, has apparently made great strides, shutting out Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky in the second half of both victories.
Also, Elon QB Thomas Wilson has impressed early while replacing Scott Riddle. On a gimpy ankle, he passed for 416 yards in a 23-22 win over North Carolina Central. Elon must hope that Wilson stays healthy, because I see that backup QB Tyler Smith has a passer rating of -5.15. Don’t know if I’ve seen that before.
