Comedy ‘Curtains’ skewers ‘Oklahoma’

“Curtains,” a musical murder-mystery that has a police detective solving a murder or two and saving the show, will be the Hilltop Players’ and Bryan Music Department’s final production of the year. The production will run Thursday through April 21.

According to director Bernie Belisle, “Curtains” tells the story of how on opening night of the musical “Robbin’ Hood of the Old West,” the leading lady is murdered. A Boston police lieutenant is called in to investigate, and in the process he falls in love and ends up being the show doctor, who recommends improvements to make this terrible play a success.

The play-within-a-play, “Robbin’ Hood,” is a spoof on the classic “Oklahoma” and contains “a lot of good music, from Dixieland to jazz to Western, and a lot of jokes that make this a really fun show,” Belisle said. “It has great opportunities for a cast of about 30 dancers, chorus and leads.”

Principal cast members include sophomore Luke Fox, of Burlington, N.C., as the detective; junior Mariana Sterne, of Alexandria, Va., as his love interest; and junior Meghan Jones, of Chattanooga, as the producer of “Robbin’ Hood.”

The curtain for “Curtains” is at 7:30 p.m. in Rudd Auditorium on the Dayton, Tenn., campus.

Tickets, priced at $9 for students and $11 for adults, are available by calling 423-775-7271.
