Eagles’ Turnage ready to do more

Elijah Turnage has given up the No. 63 jersey in which he built a reputation as a defensive-line force for Signal Mountain.

He’ll now sport No. 32 and show up occasionally in the Eagles’ offensive backfield.

“The number 63 is how everybody sees me,” the 6-foot, 250-pound senior said. “I’ve been told it’s harder to find me this year because I’m wearing a different number. You have to do what’s best for the team.

“I’m excited about the new role. I’m excited about being there for the team. I’m hoping it gives me an opportunity to be more of a contributor,” said Turnage, who also has played on most of the special teams during the past three seasons.

“He can block, and it gives us another edge offensively when we need it,” coach Bill Price said. “Elijah is a very physical football player that’s started since day one. He gives leadership that we desperately need this year on a young team.
