IF YOU GOWhat: Faculty chamber recital. When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday.Where: Roland Hayes Concert Hall, corner of Vine and Palmetto streets.Admission: Free.Phone: 425-4645.

A faculty chamber recital, scheduled Thursday at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, will showcase the talents of the UTC Music Department.

According to a news release, the audience will be treated to “a romance for flute, sax and piano; sonatas for horn and trumpet with piano; a set of French art songs accompanied by flute, cello and piano; a brass ensemble piece written by one of the performers; and a sonata for two pianos with bass and percussion.”

Among the highlights of the evening is Maurice Ravel’s “Chansons Madécases,” a challenging piece that is rarely performed, according to the release. Ravel was known to have been attracted to exotic texts, with this one being among his most adventurous. Written in 1925, it is based on melodies from Madagascar.

Composed in 2007 for William Mann, “Trifecta” by Kenyon Wilson, UTC tuba/euphonium professor, is a lively trombone feature piece for brass quintet.

Sonata for Two Pianists was born when composer Claude Bolling met pianist Emanuel Ax and wrote a sonata for him. Conceived as one continual work, as opposed to a many-movement work, it incorporates elements of both the classical and jazz cultures.
