Monteagle, Tenn., will observe its 50th year of incorporation and unveil a new town seal during festivities today.
“It’s for home folks; it’s for the people to enjoy. Everyone’s welcome,” Mayor Marilyn Nixon said Friday afternoon. “That’s what the mountain’s about.”
Nixon said the Red, White and Blue Celebration, featuring a ceremony, musical performances and a street dance set to last until 10 p.m. CDT, will begin at 10 a.m. CDT. She said state tourism officials, local officials and mayors from Grundy, Marion and Franklin counties — parts of the town are in each of the three counties — are expected to attend.
The event will include a military color guard service, a flag raising and the announcement of the amateur artist whose winning contest design for the seal was chosen, Nixon said.
Monteagle, a popular scenic stop for travelers along Interstate 24, is the home of the Highlander Folk School and a gateway to the South Cumberland Recreation Area.
“We’ve done quite a bit” over the years, Nixon said. “We’re moving forward.”
