OHS students win second and third place in VW art contest

Ooltewah High School is among eight area middle and high schools to participate in an art contest sponsored by Volkswagen of Chattanooga titled Seeing Chattanooga through the Eyes of Your Volkswagen.

OHS student Chris Inthavongsa’s piece won second place overall, and third place overall went to OHS student Jordan Bennett.

“There are some really good pieces of art out there,” said Karla Riddle, director of innovative programs for Hamilton County Department of Education. “It brings up lots of interesting conversation.”

The contest is the second organized by Carrie Cook, visual arts teacher at OHS and lead visual arts teacher for Hamilton County Schools. The first, Traveling Volkswagen Art Show, was held in 2008, when the corporation had just moved to Chattanooga, and involved students from throughout Hamilton County and North Georgia.

“Volkswagen requested we do another,” said Cook of the motivation behind the second contest. “They felt like art was important to the community and wanted to support the school system.”
