After busy days at work or an afternoon of shopping around Hamilton Place, Shogun Japanese Steak & Sushi creates the perfect atmosphere for guests to relax and be entertained while enjoying delicious hibachi-style entrées.

“Our chefs excel in entertainment and are extremely talented,” says general manager Sangki Yoon. “We hire qualified chefs with at least 10-15 years experience. Ninety percent of our chefs have worked with me since we opened the restaurant. They have high experience and followers.”

During lunch, the grills are pre-heated and a chef starts cooking every 10 to 12 minutes. The performance takes approximately 45 minutes at lunch and the bill is brought to the table while guests are eating, so those with a strict lunch hour can return to work on time. At lunch, guests who don’t have time to dine in or want to sit in the atrium next to the sushi bar, can enjoy a fresh bento box like the shrimp tempura with two pieces of shrimp and vegetables deep fried to a golden brown and served with miso soup, salad, steamed rice, three pieces of gyoza and four pieces of California roll. At dinner, both the guests and chefs can take their time and enjoy a more leisurely pace of dining and entertainment.

“We use USDA choice meats – all our sauces are homemade, like the teriyaki and our white sauce,” Yoon says.

Many guests use the restaurant’s famous white sauce as a dipping sauce, while others pour it like gravy over the restaurant’s rice and freshly grilled chicken, shrimp or steak. Shogun also prides itself on using original Japanese products at the sushi bar. Everything from the soy sauce to udon noodles used in the restaurant’s udon soup are Japanese-made, imported products. Shogun never uses frozen meat, providing only the freshest and high-grade choice steak.

With the economy still unstable for many, Yoon says the restaurant is still providing a special happy hour every Monday through Thursday from 5-10 p.m. with two-for-one specials for Japanese sake, beer and house wines. During this happy hour, guests can enjoy $1 sushi, a two-roll special for $7.50 and three sushi rolls for $10.95. There is also an Early Bird special for any two guests dining together Monday through Thursday from 5-6 p.m., Friday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The Early Bird includes two orders of teriyaki chicken for $16.95, or two combo meals of shrimp and chicken or steak and chicken for $26.95.

“Some customers are regulars and we try to give them a special price,” Yoon says. “The Early Bird special targets students and young couples. We also have dinner specials.”

Shogun also encourages guests to dine in for birthdays, providing a free pineapple and orange dessert, a pair of birthday chopsticks and a traditional Japanese birthday song accompanied by drums. Those guests celebrating their birthday, who bring a valid ID and purchase at least four entrées, can receive half-price for the meal, up to $10 at lunch and $20 at dinner.
