Lookouts pull out a win for Withrow

In the summer of 2001, the Atlanta Braves’ Greg Maddux pitched 72 consecutive innings without allowing a walk.

Chris Withrow won’t be compared to Maddux any time soon.

Withrow was the winning pitcher in Chattanooga’s 5-3 triumph Monday night over Montgomery at AT&T Field despite walking six batters. Of the 93 pitches thrown by the 23-year-old Texan in five elongated innings, 47 were balls.

“Chris just had a tough day with some mechanical glitches,” Lookouts pitching coach Chuck Crim said. “I’m absolutely wiped out from this game right here, but I’m glad he got the ‘W.’ He’s pitched some other games where deserved a ‘W,’ and this game always evens things out.”

The Lookouts improved to 14-18 before an announced crowd of 2,577.
