In 1863, a month after the Battles for Chattanooga, Christmas for the Cravens family was spent away from their home on Lookout Mountain, as not much of the dwelling was still standing. Union soldiers and war correspondents camping nearby had stripped the home of its wood to have tent flooring, firewood and souvenirs. Tours at a Christmas Open House will be offered every 30 minutes from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7. The house will be decorated in a manner recalling the Civil War era. Reservations are required due to space limitations. Call the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at 423-821-7786.
