This week is National Fire Prevention Week, and the Signal Mountain Fire Department is recognizing the occasion with a special presentation on this year’s theme, preventing kitchen fires, at the MACC Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
“We could show [attendees] some things they’ve never heard and will give them some tips on what to do and what not to do,” said Capt. Kevin Nichols.
In 2011, almost one-half of all reported home fires were fires in which cooking was involved, he said. That same year, kitchen fires were the cause of 19 percent of home-fire deaths and two-thirds of home-fire injuries, Nichols added.
During the upcoming event, he plans to discuss ways to prevent cooking fires as well as ways to handle kitchen fires when they happen as well as general fire prevention guidelines.
The presentation should last around 30-45 minutes, he said.
