Scare on the Square coming to downtown LaFayette

Carnival food, candy and lots of people in costume – typically 2,000-3,000 people – set the scene for the annual Scare on the Square in downtown LaFayette.

This year’s event is Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“Scare on the Square has a long tradition in LaFayette, when over 30 years ago, a downtown merchant named Joe Stock began Scare on the Square,” said Main Street Manager/LaFayette Downtown Development Director Matthew Williams. “While Joe Stock may be gone, the tradition he left us lives on today. It is an event where children can come to the square dressed up and business owners give them candy.”

The majority of the businesses on the square participate in the festive event, he said.

Williams, dressed as the scarecrow from the “Wizard of Oz,” and his wife, dressed as Dorothy, will welcome children to the square.

Admission to the event is free for the whole family, with free candy and free balloons. Baked goods, candy apples, popcorn, funnel cakes, fried Oreos, nachos and cheese and pizza will be available for purchase from businesses and civic groups set up along the square.

“There will also be a best decorated store window contest,” said Williams, adding that the stores will be judged on most artistic and most creative and a photo of the winning store will be submitted to media outlets for publication. “Bring your children, your costumes and your candy bucket to Scare on the Square.”
