The men’s club at Signal Crest United Methodist Church is again selling Christmas trees and wreaths in the church parking lot to benefit various church missions.
“They’re good trees for a good cause,” said club member Tony Scott.
“All the money is distributed locally to charities identified by the church that we like to support,” said fellow club member and new town of Signal Mountain Mayor Dick Gee.
Among the local missions the sale supports are Boy Scout Troop 116, the SCUMC youth group, Habitat for Humanity, Signal Mountain Social Services and scholarship aid for Camp Lookout.
Gee said the club has been selling trees for more than 25 years.
“We did barbecues in the past, but now the Lions Club has cornered the market on barbecues,” he said. “We thought this was a logical alternative to raise money for our local ministries, and we’ve raised a lot of money this way.”
Last year the tree sale raised $5,000, he said, adding that the club has not raised its tree prices in more than 10 years.
“We’ve had people who have told us they come here because we’re local and serve local people,” said Gee.
Club member Fred Wildman said the club orders 200 trees of various sizes each year from a farm in North Carolina, and they typically sell out. Leftover trees are donated to families in need through Signal Mountain Social Services.
SCUMC is at 1005 Ridgeway Ave. and can be reached at 886-2330. Trees will be sold Monday-Friday from 3-8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-8 p.m. until they are gone.
