BERLIN (AP) – A Moscow museum’s look at the work of an early Soviet design school, which had links to and is often compared with Germany’s Bauhaus movement, is going on show in Berlin.

The VKhUTEMAS school, which emerged from Russia’s post-revolutionary chaos and existed until 1930, is one of the most important sites “not only of the Russian but also the European avant-garde,” according to Gereon Sievernich, director of Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau.

The “VKhUTEMAS – A Russian Laboratory of Modernity” exhibition opens Friday and runs through April 6. The show in Berlin follows two years of work with Moscow’s Schusev State Museum of Architecture.

Sievernich says it concentrates on architectural designs by the school’s students and teachers – some of them “completely unbuildable” and reflecting constant squabbling over artistic directions.
