A corrections supervisor in DeKalb County, Ala., has been fired after he allegedly extorted money from an inmate and used his position to bring contraband into the county detention center.
In an email late Friday, Sheriff Jimmy Harris said Brian Scott Crowe, 44 of Fort Payne, was arrested after an investigation.
Crowe served as a jail sergeant and was a long-time employee, Harrris said. Crowe has been booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center on charges of first-degree extortion and third-degree promoting prison contraband.
Harris didn’t provide specifics of either the extortion or contraband charges.
Additional charges are possible, Harris said.
“It’s embarrassing to be in a position where I have to arrest one of my employees,” the sheriff said.
“I expect my employees to set a higher standard of conduct and this case just shows that people can disappoint you. … I will not tolerate any one mistreating the public or our inmates. We will continue to do what is right no matter what the consequences. I appreciate the trust the people have put in me and my employees and we will always try to earn it.”
