Man shot, killed during dispute
ATHENS, Tenn. – A 49-year-old Athens man was shot dead Tuesday by his nephew, authorities said.
Around 2 p.m. that day a sheriff’s deputy spoke with William Goins, 27, at his home about his ongoing dispute with Tabitha Ghorley, his cousin who also lived at the home.
About 15 minutes after the deputy left, Tabitha Ghorley arrived at the home with her father, Bobby Ghorley, McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said.
A physical confrontation broke out between Bobby Ghorley and Billy Goins, William’s father. During the struggle William Goins pulled out a small-caliber handgun and shot Bobby Ghorley, the sheriff said.
Sheriff’s deputies and EMS units responded within minutes, and William Goins surrendered without resisting. Bobby Ghorley was pronounced dead at the scene.
