Takes the Cake

Special celebration or not, I don’t need a reason to eat cake. That’s just the kind of girl I am. For one of my early birthdays, my grandmother baked a cat-shaped cake complete with textured frosting and a teal collar. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. This was the early ’90s, before Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss permeated our lives through television and before I knew cakes could be shaped in the forms of buildings, cars and bowls of macaroni-and-cheese. Little 6-year-old me would have requested that as my birthday cake, complete with chicken-nugget topped cupcakes. But now I know that cakes can be anything you want them to be. For weddings, people envision elaborately detailed towers of white frosting and unique and personal groom’s cakes offered as appeasements to the future Mister. Every crazy custom cake I see trumps the last, making my life an endless game of “Who’s made the craziest cake?” …

So I set out to find the craziest, most creative and incredibly extravagant cakes of Chattanooga. It wasn’t hard. It seems like every neighborhood has an extreme cake baker, like mom and pop bakeries of years gone by except transformed into a Technicolor whirl.
