Chickamauga keeps O millage property tax, continues 12 mils school tax

Thanks to Local Option Sales Tax the city of Chickamauga will continue its zero millage rate.

“Our millage rate with a rollback of Local Option Sales Tax at 1.19 gives us a zero millage rate,” said City Manager Micheal Haney, at the close of the Sept. 24 Chickamauga City Council meeting. “This is our 14th year without a property tax increase. We have no property tax.”

Haney said citizens living outside the city limits in Walker County pay property tax and school tax.

“Over the last 14 years we’ve saved property owners [in the city of Chickamauga] $5,274,497,” said Haney. “Our millage rate was 3.46 [mils] in the year 2000. After 2000, it became zero mils. Local Option Sales Tax keeps us from having a millage rate. LOST offsets it.”

However, the school tax rate is still at 12 mils. This means that a homeowner with a home valued at $100,000 would pay approximately $480 annually at a fair market value. The school tax benefits Chickamauga City School System.
