A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe in Monroe County landed two former sheriff’s officers behind bars Thursday on charges stemming from a 2014 arrest and alleged assault at the county jail.
Former Capt. Bill Johnson, 44, and former Detective Derrick Graves, 24, are each charged in grand jury indictments with assault and official misconduct.
Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones was out of town Thursday and was not available for comment, officials at the sheriff’s office in Madisonville said.
According to the TBI, agents determined that on April 19, 2014, the two men were involved in an assault on a person who had been arrested and was in restraints at the Monroe County Jail.
Both men were fired in September 2014 during an internal investigation by the sheriff’s office, TBI officials said.
The TBI investigation began on Jan. 16.
Jail officials said Johnson and Graves were released Thursday on $5,000 bond each.
No court date has been set.
