A day after one golfer from a local college led the field at the Tennessee State Amateur Championship, another one finished Wednesday’s second round on top of the leaderboard. Maryville’s Peyton Sliger, who is entering his senior season at Cleveland’s Lee University, scorched Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, shooting an 8-under-par 62 to follow his opening 69 and move up from a tie for 10th on Tuesday. But he’s only two shots ahead of first-round leader Wes Gosselin, who’s from Knoxville and is entering his junior season at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; the Mocs captain is 7 under after shooting a 67 on Wednesday. Sixty-three players made the cut at the 72-hole tournament – the line was at 5 over – a group that includes Winston Brown and Tim Jackson, who are part of a three-way tie for seventh at 2-under 138. Germantown’s Jackson, an Honors Course member and Tennessee Golf Hall of Famer, shot a 71 in the second round, while Chattanooga’s Brown was one stroke better. Chattanooga’s Lake Johnson and Scott Stevens are among the eight players at par for the tournament and tied for 15th. Stevens shot a 70 on Wednesday and Johnson a 73. Signal Mountain’s Mikey Feher is in a five-way tie for 23rd after shooting a 70 that has him 1 over for the tournament.
