It’s all over but the shouting.
Jordan Smith sang for viewers’ votes for the final time Monday night in the first half of a two-part finale of “The Voice” on NBC. If his iTunes rankings are any indication, victory seems to be his. Smith was already No. 4 on iTunes before the show even signed off.
That keeps his iTunes record intact. In an interview with the Lee University student, host Carson Daley noted that Smith had cracked the top 10 on the iTunes singles chart each of the five weeks of live performances, something no other artist has achieved on “The Voice.” Two of those weeks he reached No. 1, ousting pop diva Adele from that spot after she had topped the charts for a month with “Hello.”
Smith is one of four finalists left standing in the singing competition. The other finalists are Barrett Baber, Jeffery Austin and Knoxville’s teen country singer Emily Ann Roberts. Each singer performed three numbers Monday night: a duet with their coach, a holiday song and a solo.
Smith opened the show with “Climb Every Mountain.” In the judges’ comments afterward, coach Blake Shelton told Smith his performances were “always so consistent — consistently good.” By the show’s sign off, “Climb Every Mountain” was No. 4, and Smith’s duet with coach Adam Levine was No. 8. But more surprising, his breakout performance from last week’s episode, “Somebody to Love,” had climbed the chart again as well, rising from No. 33 to 13 during Monday’s two-hour show.
Smith and coach Adam Levine sang the Beach Boys “God Only Knows” for their duet. The two tenors sang the majority of the number in unison, blending so seamlessly that they sounded like one. For his holiday song, Smith performed a hauntingly beautiful version of “Mary, Did You Know.” It received a standing ovation from all four coaches and the audience. Coach Adam Levine told the audience that he’d never heard the song and it had not been his choice. But when Smith suggested it, he went with the contestant’s judgment and he was glad he did that, Levine said.
The winner of Season 9 will be announced tonight at the conclusion of a two-hour, star-studded finale that starts at 9 p.m.
