The National Park Service confirmed Monday that a missing New York man was found dead at Chickamauga Battlefield this weekend.

Chief Ranger Todd Roeder said two hikers found Duane L. Hollenbeck, 59, around noon on Saturday and called authorities. Park rangers and local police arrived and started an investigation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was continuing Monday.

Roeder noted that Hollenbeck, who had been reported missing days before by a neighbor in New York, had a laceration on his head. Roeder said Hollenbeck appeared to have been dead for less than a day.

The body has been sent for an autopsy. A phone message left Monday afternoon at the FBI's Atlanta office was not immediately returned.

"The last couple of instances that I've seen where someone died at the park have just been natural causes, and this one is a little bit different," Roeder said, adding that people have had heart attacks before while at the park.
