Gang member arrested for robbery, shooting

Chattanooga police on Wednesday arrested a suspect in a Dec. 17 robbery that ended with a man shot in the arm and abdomen.

Police say Richard Lovingood, 25, was walking out of his home at 4312 Ohls Ave. when Kerry McKinney, 28, pulled up in a silver vehicle and ordered Lovingood to “Give me all you got.”

Lovingood told McKinney he didn’t have anything to give, and that’s when McKinney opened fire, Lovingood told police. The victim said McKinney got out of the car and continued to fire at him as he fell to the ground.

McKinney was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, especially aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.

McKinney has a long criminal history in Hamilton County, with charges ranging from harassment to possession of cocaine to assault. He is a validated member of the Athens Park Bloods.

He turned himself in to Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office fugitive division personnel, according to court records.

There have been 118 shootings in the city so far this year, according to Times Free Press records, and 23 were fatal. In all, 30 people have died by violence in the city this year.

Since Lovingood was shot on Dec. 17, one other person – 20-year-old Javoris Akins – has been shot. No suspect has been arrested in Akins’ case.
