UTK lands antique map collection

Viewing

To set up a viewing of the map collection, contact Lindsey Waugh at lwaugh@ku.edu. The McClung Museum is at 1327 Circle Park Drive in Knoxville. Admission is free, and the museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

University of Tennessee students and faculty now have an increased ability to travel by map centuries into the past.

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture has received a gift from private donors of 191 antique maps created in Western Europe between the 16th and 19th centuries, according to Lindsey Waugh, the museum’s coordinator of academic programs.

Most of the maps are copperplate engravings with hand-painted watercolor, and 20 maps now hang in the Burchfiel Geography Building on the UT campus.
