When Bingo Morton received a couple calls from his University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football teammates Wednesday, he didn’t believe what he was hearing.

It took UTC head coach Russ Huesman to confirm it.

NFL standout and former University of Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was in town Wednesday, and he popped onto Scrappy Moore field for a 90-minute training session with UTC quarterback Jacob Huesman and a number of receivers who were at the facility for offseason work.

Morton was happy he finally listened.

“It was a great experience,” Morton said. “I was nervous at first, but I got to see how he approached practicing. Everything had to be right, crisp and on time, and you didn’t want to make mistakes that would get you called out on.

“It was a good experience something I will remember for a long time.”

The Mocs are approaching the start of camp, which will lead to the season opener against another highly ranked opponent, Jacksonville State. The two teams are in the top 10 in every Football Championship Series preseason poll released so far.

Lindy’s Magazine ranked UTC No. 5 on Wednesday, which is the highest ranking ever for the program. The Mocs received No. 8 rankings in polls from Athlon and Sporting News.

The Gamecocks are ahead of the Mocs in the Sporting News and Athlon polls, but sit a spot behind UTC at No. 6 in the Lindy’s poll.

The SportsNetwork.com and FCS coaches’ polls – the only two polls recognized by the NCAA – will be released soon.
