Expo offers resources to homeschooling

Teresa Knight has nine children. Before she even got married, she knew she was going to homeschool. She wanted her children to have a full understanding of what, in her eyes, was important – faith.

“We wanted to teach them what we thought was important, rather than what the world thought was important,” Knight said. “If teaching the things of God was a lifestyle of learning, then surely that’s the most important thing and all their subjects should go off of that.”

Four of Knight’s children have graduated from homeschool. She also has run a book company – Knight’s Book Knook – for the last 22 years. Friday and Saturday, her booth was part of the Home Education Expo at Camp Jordan Arena in East Ridge.

The expo featured booths from preschool to college preparatory material for parents wanting to homeschool their children.

“It is a mix of everything, because there is a great need for everything out there,” said Jan Bontekoe, who has coordinated the expo for 15 years and homeschooled her own seven children. “We have a number of booths that cater to children with special needs. We have other booths, on the other end of the spectrum, catering to the AP prep.”
