A Jackson County, Ala., judge this morning ordered a half million dollar bond to be set for the University of Alabama Birmingham student charged with beating his mother to death with a baseball bat on Friday over his grades.

Tyler Ryan Blansit, 22, of Mentone, Ala., will remain behind bars on a $500,000 cash bond on a murder charge linked to the discovery Friday of the battered body of his mother, Sherry Ann Blansit, 45, officials said.

The discovery was made in the backyard of a home in Mentone, Ala., atop Lookout Mountain, according to authorities who found the woman’s body on Friday afternoon.

Authorities say Blansit, 22, confessed that he killed his mother after an argument over his grades. Blansit told officers that he struck his mother in the head and authorities said early indications appear to show that Sherry Blansit died of blunt force trauma to the head. After his reported confession, the district attorney ordered that Tyler Blansit be charged with murder.

He remains held at the DeKalb County Jail.
