Humane Educational Society grateful for budget support

On behalf of the staff and board of directors of the Humane Educational Society, we are writing to express our sincere thanks to Mayor Jim Coppinger for including our request in the upcoming budget. The amount will allow us to meet critical needs and begin to think about long-term goals for the organization. We are hopeful that county commissioners will support our request and are grateful for their consideration. If you’d like to support the Humane Society, please consider a monetary donation in honor or memory of one of your furry pals; drop off some dry food; or provide some rawhides and chew toys. All of these will assist in meeting our needs, but more than that, a letter or email of support to your county commissioner during this budget season would also go a long way.

Are we saving Muffy but killing Grandma?

As an avid CSPAN watcher, I want to share my impression of the common themes heard from Republican candidates at various gatherings. Middle East — Get them before they get us, this having been tried before with benefits only to stock prices for Halliburton (Cheney), oil (Bushes), six-figure pensions (military brass, arms merchants). Besides, history informs this tactic frequently fails (witness war photos of Hiroshima, Dresden). But this couldn’t happen to us, although missile and nuclear technology reside in the Middle East. Does one realize what happens with power grid failure (can’t pump gas, food)? And cutting the budget deficit is right up there, too. Recognize 70 percent of the budget is for Medicare/Social Security/Medicaid. Imagine Grandma on the sidewalk. But never mind; Muffy, the wealthy heir, receives her inheritance tax free. Jobs can be exported for slave wages. What minimum wage? Its all about “growth.” Remember, it is freedom we love. And Humana is about to be acquired by part of Blue Cross, so expect 50 percent health insurance rate hikes, benefits cut (never mind, it’s just in the fine print). The electorate (visions of large campaign donors) will never know.
