Editor’s note: Barry Courter has a 26-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 21-year-old daughter who is a senior in college. Each week he poses a question he wishes they would ask.
Q: Dad, what impresses you or turns you off when meeting my friends?
A: Offering a firm handshake and looking someone in the eye is the right thing to do. A limp handshake — handing someone a dead fish, as we say — is a real turnoff. Worse still is not saying hello or shaking hands at all. I’ve always been impressed by your friends who go out of their way to come up and say hello.
