Second-seeded Maxx Lipman from the University of Florida and fourth seed Paul Oosterbaan from Georgia each defeated a No. 9 seed 6-1, 6-2 in the Men's Open round of 16 of the Tennessee Valley Open Championships that got underway Wednesday and continues through Sunday at Manker Patten.
Lipman, a former Brentwood (Tenn.) High School standout, won over Georgia's Eric Diaz; Oosterbaan's victim was Alex Gornet from Louisville, Ky. Unseeded Julian Bradley also won comfortably (6-1, 6-0) over a 9 seed, Christopher Cox, in the round of 16, but 5 seed Rob Galloway needed three sets to get past Jarryd Woog, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Nathan Pasha from Atlanta is the top seed. He was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference player this past season as a Georgia senior. He beat David Henry 6-3, 6-2.
Third seed Kyle Koch beat Ankit Chopra 6-3, 6-2. One of the 9 seeds, Adam Steryous, won 6-4, 6-4 over a 5, Carl Abolos, but 5 seed Jordan Cox rallied past 9 seed Davis Dawson, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Top three seeds Erin Routliffe, Maya Jansen and Carmen Blanco from the Alabama Crimson Tide downed Gabby Crofford, Turner Yates and Nadege Pouatcha, respectively, in straight sets in the women's open round of 16.
Fourth-seeded Kayla Jones from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga rolled past Sofia Blanno, 6-1, 6-2, while Blair Martin won 6-0, 6-0 over Mariam Shaat and Bennett Dunn outlasted Danielle Vines 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
