A Chattanooga police officer who was suspended for 30 days without pay after he fired at a moving vehicle during a traffic stop in late October has dropped his appeal of the suspension, according to police.
When police Chief Fred Fletcher disciplined Officer Alex Olson with the department’s maximum 30-day suspension in January, Olson and his attorneys vowed to fight the decision, saying the punishment was too harsh.
But on June 18, the police department and Olson “reached a resolution through mediation” and Olson agreed to drop the appeal, according a statement from police.
Details on what that resolution included were not immediately available. Police communications coordinator Kyle Miller referred any further questions to the Chattanooga City Attorney’s office, which could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
The shooting that prompted Olson’s suspension occurred on Oct. 5, 2014, after Olson saw a car drive through a stop sign near Windsor Court.
Olson attempted to pull over the driver, Luster Deloney, 20, but Deloney fled, pulling into a dead-end road.
Olson’s in-car camera recorded the entire incident. It shows him pull his vehicle behind the suspect’s car and step out.
Deloney then shifts his car into reverse and rams it into Olson’s patrol car, and Olson fires four shots at Deloney’s car as it drove away, tires squealing.
