Basketball

* With regular-season champion Tennessee Wesleyan also winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament, Bryan College got the second bid from the AAC to the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Coach Jason Smith’s Lady Lions (21-8) were the second-seeded team going into the tournament, where they were upset by eventual runner-up Milligan. This is the first time Bryan’s women have qualified since 2007, when current Illinois coach Matt Bollant was the coach at the Dayton, Tenn., school.

Softball

* Chattanooga-area players had big impacts as Brenau University began Southern States Athletic Conference softball play with four wins this past weekend. Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton and Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy each was 2-for-4 with a home run and Madison Lacy from Dade County had three hits in a 13-10 win at Coastal Georgia, and Dade’s Madison Gossett was the winning pitcher with only one earned run allowed in her 3 2/3 innings and then got the save in a 3-1 victory that featured another Moore homer. The Golden Tigers (10-1) then beat Brewton-Parker 8-0 and 10-4 with Gossett earning her sixth win of the season in the first game, when Moore had two RBIs and Payne had two hits and stole two bases, and Lacy contributing two hits and four RBIs in game two.

* Covenant College’s Morgan Lane from Girls Preparatory School was the USA South softball player of the week announced Monday, and teammate Joni Johnson was the rookie pitcher of the week. Lane was 4-for-4 with three home runs, eight RBIs and five runs in a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott. She is batting .550 with 13 RBIs this season. Johnson got a save and a win against Agnes Scott, giving up one hit in five innings.
