NASHVILLE — A Memphis youth counselor has been accused of having sexual contact with a child in his care. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says 25-year-old Deniro Smith, a behavioral youth counselor at Youth Villages, has been arrested and charged with statutory rape by an authority figure, statutory rape and solicitation of a minor.
Officials said Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich asked the TBI to investigate a report of sexual assaults at Youth Villegas in Bartlett. The TBI said that during the course of the investigation, agents discovered that Deniro Smith, a behavioral youth counselor at the Youth Villages, was involved in sexual activities with a juvenile resident of the facility.
Jail records do not list an attorney for Smith.
