ATLANTA — A former DeKalb County commissioner who admitted to stealing taxpayer money was sentenced to federal prison Friday.
Elaine Boyer, 58, of Stone Mountain, was sentenced to 14 months. Boyer used her county-issued charge card to steal more than $15,000 that she used to make personal purchases between October 2010 and February 2014, prosecutors said. Authorities have also said Boyer fraudulently billed the county for consulting work by a family friend that was never performed between September 2009 and November 2011. Boyer spent the money on personal expenses including hotels and high-end stores, officials have said.
Boyer has been ordered to pay $87,350 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release after her sentence. She served on the county commission for more than 20 years and resigned a day before federal charges were filed against her.
Boyer’s husband, John Boyer, 62, was also involved and pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Prosecutors have said the couple experienced financial trouble in 2009 and John Boyer concocted the kickback scheme. John Boyer is scheduled to be sentenced on May 6, prosecutors said.
