Chattanooga won Saturday night for the 10th time in its last 11 games and strengthened its position atop the Southern League North standings with a 10-9 victory over Montgomery in front of a crowd of 4,620 at AT&T Field.
Right fielder Travis Harrison was among the offensive standouts for the Lookouts with two two-run doubles and a sacrifice fly.
Center fielder Byron Buxton provided a spark at the top of the lineup, reaching base four times, including an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth. The only out he made was when he led off the bottom of the first by lining back to pitcher Bradin Hagens.
Chattanooga (23-13) had a 5-1 lead after a two-run fourth that included a run-scoring double by Heiker Meneses.
Up until then, Lookouts starting pitcher Alex Wimmers had a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts. But the lead he was given was wiped out by the Biscuits in the fifth on consecutive two-RBI hits by Tommy Coyle, who doubled, and Boog Powell.
Wimmers (2-0) did not return for the sixth but did end up being the winning pitcher. Michael Gonzales’ two-run double in the bottom of the fifth gave the Lookouts the lead for good.
Chattanooga added three runs in the sixth and ended up needing them all, since Montgomery (15-21) rallied for three in the eighth and one in the ninth. The Biscuits had the tying runner on first with one out in the ninth before reliever Jake Reed earned his first save of the season by inducing a game-ending double play.
