A student at UTC reported to police in August that she was sexually assaulted on campus, and officials with the school said today the investigation remains ongoing.
The female student told campus police on Aug. 24 that she was raped two days prior in one of the Stophel Apartments on campus, according to a UTC police report.
The student told police she was drinking with the male, and remembered falling asleep on his bed fully clothed. Later, she woke up undressed with the suspect on top of her engaging in sexual activity, the report states.
“The victim stated that she blacked out toward the end, but recalls telling the suspect to stop several times during the incident,” according to the report.
The case has been under investigation since August, according to UTC police; and Associate Vice Chancellor Chuck Cantrell said the case is also being investigated by the office of the Dean of Students.
“If criminal charges are filed, those charges would be public information; the results of a student judicial case are part of the student’s academic record and considered private by law,” Cantrell said in a written statement.
Cantrell said the school cannot say anything more regarding the case at this time.
Another UTC female student claimed in April of 2014 that she was raped at a party by Corey Mock, a former UTC wrestler. In August of 2014, Mock was originally found “not responsible” for sexual misconduct by University Judicial Officer Joanie Sompayrac.
Sompayrac reversed this decision weeks later after the school asked her to reconsider. Ultimately, UTC Chancellor Steven Angle decided in December to expel Mock, but a judge ruled in January that Mock could return to campus for his final semester.
In August of this year, a Davidson County Chancery Court judge ruled that Mock should have never been expelled from UTC for violating its sexual misconduct policy, stating that the school provided insufficient evidence that Mock had sex with the student against her consent.
