I was an outsider in the special community of men and women. Yet I was repeatedly greeted with a hug, often followed by a question or comment. The concept of a stranger was foreign to my hosts.
“I’m Jeff. Who are you?”
“I like your tie.”
A helmeted man on a recumbent tricycle waved and smiled each time he pedaled by.
I could identify only an occasional word in another conversation, but it was delivered with such a smile that I had to agree with it.
