For decades, children across the country have enjoyed the tales of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends. And for the 17th year, he will be visiting the Tennessee Valley Railroad for kids to meet him up close.

“It’s a family-fun event, I think, that just draws people in,” said railroad operations manager Steve Freer. “The Thomas image is a good one; it’s wholesome and has stayed popular over the years. Kids recognize Thomas immediately.”

Although the highlight of the day is taking a ride on the train, there are also several hours of activities available to visiting families, ranging from magic shows and mini-golf to a petting zoo, balloon animals and a bounce house.

“The great thing is, kids, in a way because of Thomas, already have an interest in the railroad, even if they don’t realize it,” Freer said. ” The Thomas characters put a face on railroading. He makes it personal with [his friends] Percy, James, Spencer. The kids know them all by name and it just kind of gets them interested. We just want to hook them and make them lifetime rail fans.”

Thomas and friends will be at the Tennessee Valley Railroad April 23-24, 30, May 1 and 6. Tickets are available online at ticketweb.com. Price varies depending on time of day chosen.
