Every two years for the past 60 years, members of the Signal Mountain Community Guild have compiled the Signal Mountain Phone Directory, which lists the names, addresses and landline or cellphone numbers of residents of the 37377 ZIP code, along with other important community information.
Recently a rumor has been circulating that the guild is no longer producing the books, a rumor that members of the guild want to correct.
“We’ve never considered not publishing the directory,” said Cathy Pierce of the SMCG. “I’m not sure if the rumors get going because there are two years in between issues, or if people think the directory is becoming obsolete due to fewer homes having a landline.”
She said the guild is keeping up with the times by including cellphone numbers self-reported by residents in addition to landlines. The directories also have the unique feature of a reverse phone look-up option, which allows residents to search for numbers by street addresses, a handy tool for getting in touch with neighbors whose names are unknown.
The guild is asking community residents to submit their cellphone numbers now for the 2016-2018 edition, which is expected to be available for purchase in early December. This is several months later than the typical September release, a result of now-resolved issues with AT&T, from which the guild receives the landline listings, according to Pierce.
