Q: What causes heat stroke?
A: Heat stroke is a result of overheating, usually in response to exposure to high temperatures, high humidity and strenuous physical activity. Age, general health, medications and other conditions also are involved. The hallmark symptom of heat stroke is a body temperature of 105 degrees or greater. If you suspect someone if suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately; heat stroke is a life-threatening condition. You can help the patient by moving them out of the heat, removing any unnecessary clothing, applying ice packs to the armpits, groin, neck and back. You may also fan air over the patient. Prevention of heat is generally common sense. Drink extra fluids. Wear light-colored and lightweight clothing, along with a wide-brimmed hat when in heat. Also avoid strenuous activities in high heat and humidity.
