Drs. Daniel and Lucy Sawrie of Sawrie Orthodontics man the cotton candy machine at last year’s Back to School Block Party.Signal residents have the opportunity to show off their summer suntans and souvenirs from recent vacations at the fourth annual Back to School Block Party hosted by Mountain Top Toys, Sawrie Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry of Chattanooga.
To be held in the parking lot of the businesses, located at 1229 and 1231 Taft Highway, the event is Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“We get bigger every year,” Mountain Top Toys owner Patrick Holland said of the event, which grew from 100-150 attendees in its first year to about 300 in 2015. “Hopefully it will continue to get bigger as Signal Mountain grows.”
He said everything is free at the event, which features root beer floats donated by Pruett’s, inflatables, miniature golf, shaved ice and cotton candy. A petting zoo is a new addition for 2016, Holland added.
Mountain Top Toys will be giving away several prizes, including a game set for Spikeball, which is similar to volleyball but involves hitting a ball into a round, trampoline-net that sits low to the ground. Holland said attendees can also win Calico Critters miniature collectibles or a Sky Pogo Swing, which, as the name suggests, is a pogo stick on a swing.
“It started as, and continues to be, a thank-you to customers for supporting us,” he said of the block party, which is always held the first weekend after school starts back. “It’s a good time to see friends after summer vacation, and a good chance for new families to socialize.”
