The Hamilton County Board of Education discussed adopting drug and suicide prevention policies and changing its existing policy regarding the board’s leadership during Thursday night’s meeting.
School board member Greg Martin, who chairs the policy committee, explained how the board will be without a chairman and vice-chairman Sept. 1, as both Jonathan Welch and Donna Horn, who served in those roles, will be replaced by newly elected board members at the beginning of the month.
“We are kind of in a quagmire,” Martin said, as the board can’t vote on a new chairman until its Sept. 15 meeting.
He said having a chairman will be helpful during the intermediary two weeks, as they will help prepare the board meeting’s agenda and schedule interviews with the superintendent search firms.
Board members seemed to agree with Martin and like the proposed change to the policy, which would default the chairmanship to the longest serving board member until a new chairman can be voted upon in a meeting. A board member will likely make a motion during next week’s voting session to change the policy.
